Show Lew W. Cro January 20, 2004 FHM: Did they have warnings that typhoons were on their way and you would get out f th area? L WC: No, I don't know. I was reading an article that Halsey was told to get out of the area but he didn't do it. He was too busy chasing the Japanese Fleet. That's all I know about it. FHM: Who were your commanders? I mean, who was leading the show when you were in there? LWC: Well, there was-the Admiral was Wild Bill Halsey, most of the time. They called him Wild Bill Halsey. He was over the 7th Fleet. And then there was-oh, I can't remember his name. He was over the 3 rd Fleet. FHM: Who was the president when you served? LWC: When I went in, it was Franklin D. Roosevelt. FHM: How did you feel about him? LWC: He was a good man, I thought, a real good man. And then he died and Harry S. Truman took over. FHM: How did you feel about him? LWC: He was crude, but he was a good man. He's the type of man who said what he thought. FHM: Did you get involved politically at all at that time, or were you not interested at all? LWC: No,no. FHM: Did you ever read The Stars and Stripes? LWC: Once in a while. Yeah, we didn't get it all the time. Once in a while we'd get it and read it. And we listened to the overseas radio. We had radios on the ship, and we used to listen to the overseas radio and laugh at Tokyo Rose. 21 |
