| Abstract |
Hammar (1922-2007) recalls his childhood in Youngston, Ohio. He graduated from high school in 1940 and attended East Nazarene College in Allston, Massachusetts. He was sworn into the Air Corps in 1942, passed the flight test and physical, and completed flight training in 1943. Originally assigned to P-38s but requested a transfer to B-25s. He flew his plane, "Shat's Cookin" on sixty combat missions and left the Air Corps in 1944. Interviewed by Winston Erickson. 48 pages. |

Show ROBERT L. HAMMAR p B R2 00 WE: So advanced do you remember when this wa ? H , l ng did it tak t g t t your advanced? RLH: It was April 12, 1943. WE: So '43 you got out of training from Luke Air Force Base in Phoenix Arizona. RLH: Yes. WE: Then where were you assigned? RLH: I was assigned to Tallahassee, Florida, and awaited orders there. They assigned us to the P-39 Air Cobra and sent me to Fort Meyers, Florida. And we checked out the 39 and we transferred to Venice, Florida, where I finished my combat training. WE: How did you like the Air Cobra, the P-39? RLH: It was a fun airplane to fly, but I wouldn't want to fly it in combat. WE: Why's that? RLH: Well, it was underpowered, number one, and it didn't have enough armor plate around the engine area. But it was a fun plane to fly. WE: Fun plane to fly even if the driveshaft went between your legs (laughs)? That would make me nervous. I guess it was shrouded. RLH: Yes. WE: It wasn't just spinning there (laughs)? RLH: No. WE: So you went to Fort Meyers, to where? RLH: Venice. Just up the coast, on the Gulf Coast. WE: And what did you do there? RLH: Still in training. 19 |
