| Abstract |
Hammar (1922-2007) recalls his childhood in Youngston, Ohio. He graduated from high school in 1940 and attended East Nazarene College in Allston, Massachusetts. He was sworn into the Air Corps in 1942, passed the flight test and physical, and completed flight training in 1943. Originally assigned to P-38s but requested a transfer to B-25s. He flew his plane, "Shat's Cookin" on sixty combat missions and left the Air Corps in 1944. Interviewed by Winston Erickson. 48 pages. |

Show ROB RTL. HAMMAR RLH: He was my roommate when I was a sophomore. WE: Oh, really. RLH: Yes. So only one year and I was glad to come back home. WE: And where was he from originally? PT MB R 2000 RLH: Well, he was from Detroit originally, I guess. His father had a band and he played in some of the big hotels in Detroit. WE: I see. That's interesting that you both ended up in Salt Lake. RLH: I ran into him when we moved there. I heard his voice on the radio one day and I said, "That sounds like Tom Came." I went down to the Theater 138 and I walked in and I hadn't seen him in, I don't know how many years. WE: Interesting how life goes, isn't it? RLH: Yes. WE: Did you participate in any extracurricular activities in school? Drama? Athletics? RLH: Yes, I was in a play. Athletics, yes. Basketball, basically, but some track and other stuff that we played on the playgrounds there at school. WE: Did you play on school teams? RLH: Yes, I did basketball. WE: You were a basketball star (laughs). RLH: I _[unclear]_ the star. WE: So, let's see, you would have graduated in either '39 or '40? RLH: Forty. WE: Nineteen forty, then. You graduated in 1940. Before that, and with your history interest, were you keeping track of what was happening in Europe and the Far East? 6 |
