| Abstract |
Mr. Richardson was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on July13, 1923. He discusses his childhood and the Depression. He joined the Navy in August 1942 and took ground training as an aviation cadet at Brigham Young University. Pre-flight school was in San Luis Obispo, California, followed by primary flight training in Pasco, Washington. He received basic flight training at Corpus Christi, Texas and graduated as an Ensign in February 1944. Ordered to Aleutian Islands (Attu) from where he flew PV-1 Lockheed Venturas on patrol bombing missions conducting sector searches around Japanese territories. Shot down August 14, 1944. Describes crash landing in Petropavlovsk, Russia. Taken as an internee for over 6 months by the Russians. He describes his experiences during that time. In January 1944, the Russians smuggled the internees out through Iran where they were transferred to American custody. Continuing through Cairo and Naples, their group boarded Liberty ships back to New York. He was reassigned to North Island ferrying aircraft until discharge in April 1946. Mr. Richardson graduated from the University of Utah in architecture. His firm designed, among other buildings, the Pharmacy building at the University of Utah; Whitmore Library; Classic Bowling; and numerous schools throughout Utah and Idaho. Show KEITH RICHARD ON PRI 2 2001 the Whitmore Library out on 7000 South. We did a lot of the county librarie . I did a 1 t of the schools and a lot of bowling alleys. That was when bowling took off. B wling wa popular in 1957. It was a going thing. I did about twenty bowling alleys in Utah and Wyoming and Idaho, all around. Classic Bowl was my first big one downtown, in South Salt Lake. We did a lot of schools all over Utah and Wyoming, mostly. BEC: Do you have a favorite building that you designed? KEI: Oh, the Pharmacy building at the University of Utah is as nice as any of them. In 1975 I had a real bad accident. I fell off a mountain at Lake Powell. I broke into little pieces. My body was just shot. After being in the hospital quite a few months and had been recuperating I decided, well, I just couldn't take the pace. I used to work sixteen hours a day half the time and traveled a lot, and so on. But it was a pace that was fast and hard. My body wouldn't take that. So in 1978 I sold the architectural business to my brother, well, mostly gave it to him. Anyway, I went to work for the [LDS] Church. I applied and got a job as construction manager for all the South and West Pacific for the Church. So we moved to Hawaii, Marian and I. The children by then were married and were scattered around Salt Lake. But we moved to Hawaii and lived there three years. Then a job opened up in the Church for international architect. There was one international architect and he couldn't handle it all so a position opened up for one more. I applied for that and became the other international architect for the Church. At first, my assignment was to supervise all of the construction of the church buildings in Latin America, from Mexico on south, so traveled there quite a bit.
