| Abstract |
Mr. Richardson was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on July13, 1923. He discusses his childhood and the Depression. He joined the Navy in August 1942 and took ground training as an aviation cadet at Brigham Young University. Pre-flight school was in San Luis Obispo, California, followed by primary flight training in Pasco, Washington. He received basic flight training at Corpus Christi, Texas and graduated as an Ensign in February 1944. Ordered to Aleutian Islands (Attu) from where he flew PV-1 Lockheed Venturas on patrol bombing missions conducting sector searches around Japanese territories. Shot down August 14, 1944. Describes crash landing in Petropavlovsk, Russia. Taken as an internee for over 6 months by the Russians. He describes his experiences during that time. In January 1944, the Russians smuggled the internees out through Iran where they were transferred to American custody. Continuing through Cairo and Naples, their group boarded Liberty ships back to New York. He was reassigned to North Island ferrying aircraft until discharge in April 1946. Mr. Richardson graduated from the University of Utah in architecture. His firm designed, among other buildings, the Pharmacy building at the University of Utah; Whitmore Library; Classic Bowling; and numerous schools throughout Utah and Idaho. Show KEITH RICHARDSON PRI 2 2001 BEC: When you were in high school, events were happening in Europe and Hitler wa coming to power; in '39 he invaded Poland. Were you aware of those things happening while they were going on? KEI: I should say. My oldest brother was on a mission in England at the time and when things got bad and they started bombing England they moved him into the Eastern States Mission in the United States. So we knew immediately the missionaries were forced out of there back home to the United States. But there were things leading up to it that we didn't know a lot about. What was happening in Europe we read in the newspapers. There were lots of headlines about the damage being done in Europe, but it didn't really hit home until Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941. That was when it really hit everybody here in the United States. And that was quite a shock to everybody. President Roosevelt announced on the radio that Pearl Harbor had been bombed, December 7th. BEC: Is that a real vivid memory for you? KEI: I should say. I'd just turned eighteen at the time. Of course, they started to draft immediately after that and we all had to register for the draft. [Editor's note: The first peacetime draft law passed Congress and was signed into law in September of 1940. The National Guard and Reserves were also called to active duty before the US was in the war. However, after December 7, 1941, the draft was greatly expanded.] We were subject to the draft, but I didn't go into the military until I was nineteen, in 1942. But the war was going strong in Europe, but it was just beginning in ... well, Japan, the war started December 7, '41. The European one started in about '39, they had problems there. So, we'd been prepared and the country was fairly geared to provide war supplies, but not much manpower until the draft, after December 7ili. 7 |
