| Abstract |
Drage (b. 1923) grew up in Salina, Utah. He was drafted into the Army in March 1942, and took basic training at Camp Sibert, Alabama. He was sent to Alaska to work on the Alcan Highway, then returned to Oregon for additional training before shipping to Europe as part of the 35th Combat Engineers. Drage participated in the D-Day invasion on Omaha Beach and continued in combat to within 25 miles of Berlin before the war ended. He was in Europe for occupation duty before being shipped back to the states for discharge on in 1945. After the war, he worked for Geneva Steel for more than 30 years. Interviewed by Benjamin J. Bahlmann. 145 pages. |

Show IL W.D 15 R R 2 2 WD: h I still d one in a whil . WIF: You know he 11 still, when there's a war program on he ' 11 till watch thos things. BJB: You'll watch actually? NWD: Well, I see how phony they are (laughs). BJB: Did you notice any kinds of effects from the war? Loud noises, did they make you jump? NWD: There's a plane that comes out and flies up around here at night. WIF: He still says, "That's a ... " What do you call it? BJB: AB-51? NWD: No, a "Bed Check Charlie." WIF: A "Bed Check Charlie." He says, "There's a Bed Check Charlie" he still says. BJB: Did you notice any difference in him when he came back? WIF: I don't know that I did, but if there was it really wasn't that noticeable. BJB: So you adjusted quite well going back into civilian life? WIF: He did then, more so than now. He watches these programs and it's hard on him and yet he insists on watching them. BJB: What do you think you took away from your military experience? Is there anything you learned from that all that helped you, you know, govern your life from then on? Was there any lessons, I guess? NWD: Oh, I'll say this much: I wouldn't give ten cents for that experience again, but I wouldn't give a million dollars to give up the experience. BJB: Do you view your military experience as positive, for the most part? 140 |
