| Abstract |
Drage (b. 1923) grew up in Salina, Utah. He was drafted into the Army in March 1942, and took basic training at Camp Sibert, Alabama. He was sent to Alaska to work on the Alcan Highway, then returned to Oregon for additional training before shipping to Europe as part of the 35th Combat Engineers. Drage participated in the D-Day invasion on Omaha Beach and continued in combat to within 25 miles of Berlin before the war ended. He was in Europe for occupation duty before being shipped back to the states for discharge on in 1945. After the war, he worked for Geneva Steel for more than 30 years. Interviewed by Benjamin J. Bahlmann. 145 pages. |

The alvation rmy wa giving them to us free and then the Red Cross was charging a dollar for their sandwich s. When we were up in, oh, what's the name of that town, where we started with the Alcan Highway? WIF: Dawson Creek? No? NWO: Yes, Dawson Creek. And one of the fellows we went up with-and there were ten ofus, went from Camp Sibert, Alabama, and were going up there-and he got word in Dawson Creek that his mother had passed away. So he went down to the Red Cross to see if he could get some money to take the train to go back down to Chicago to see his mother. WIF: You hadn't had any money for a while either. NWO: We hadn't been paid for months. And he came back and said they'd only give him ten dollars. And I said, "Well, there's ten of us, we'll all go down and get ten dollars a piece." We went down and they wouldn't give it to us because we didn't have an emergency. And I said, "You're going to give him ten dollars and that's all?" I said, "It costs ninety dollars to ride the train," and I said, "You get the money before we do. How come you can't give us each ten dollars?" And I said, "Then we'll give it to him so he can go home and see his mother." When we got up on the Alcan Highway we flew into White Horse and then they put us on trucks and took us out to the highway and Sergeant Dum came out and he told the guy that he had a telegram there. He said, "I don't have any money; I couldn't go back ifI wanted to." There was another fellow there that said, "Hey, I just won three hundred dollars in poker last night."
