| Abstract |
Drage (b. 1923) grew up in Salina, Utah. He was drafted into the Army in March 1942, and took basic training at Camp Sibert, Alabama. He was sent to Alaska to work on the Alcan Highway, then returned to Oregon for additional training before shipping to Europe as part of the 35th Combat Engineers. Drage participated in the D-Day invasion on Omaha Beach and continued in combat to within 25 miles of Berlin before the war ended. He was in Europe for occupation duty before being shipped back to the states for discharge on in 1945. After the war, he worked for Geneva Steel for more than 30 years. Interviewed by Benjamin J. Bahlmann. 145 pages. |

Show IL W.D 15 R 2 02 D Wife: Yes and I kn w that th r w re a lot of dark peopl d wn th r . My m th r used to say it's three-fifths black down there but I didn t xpect to ee practically everybody. One out of three, I think about was white and the others were black. I was ready to turn right around and come back home. BJB: So that was the nearest town where you could stay? NWD: Well, Gadsden is where she stayed. WIF: Well, Attalla was where we got off at. NWD: Yeah, Attalla was where you got off. Yes, that was the nearest town then. BJB: During boot camp you don't get any time off though, isn't that correct? NWD: No. Well ... BJB: During the first several weeks, first couple of weeks of training I thought that was your ... NWD: Yes, well, we didn't get any, any time off. WIF: Well you did get-didn't you get any Saturday or Sunday? We used to eat breakfast there with those people. NWD: Yes, every other weekend we'd get off of our basic training. And they'd give us Saturday and Sunday off and we used to go around and Mrs. Tinsley used to make biscuits about that big around. WIF: Well, they were bigger than that. Delicious but little. NWD: And I used to-Mr. Tinsley always had a dip of snuff. There was a black woman who came over there and borrowed dip all the time. And I asked him one day, I said, "Mr. Tinsley you don't chew. How come you pack snus?" And he said, "For that lady right there." 32 |
