| Abstract |
Lowell Flamm (b. 1923) recounts stories of his parents in Rexburg, Idaho, and recalls growing up in Billings, Montana, during the Depression. He joined the National Guard at 15 and served two years. He was drafted in March 1943 and accepted into OCS, eventually ending up with the 12th Armored Division in Europe. He discusses Le Havre, the Maginot Line, Herrlisheim, Adelmannsfelden, Strasbourg, Colmar, Frankfort, the Danube River, the Black Forest, and occupation duty in Austria. His stories of army life include the cold, propaganda and rumors, a wartime birth, being wounded, close escapes from death, army nurses, fighting with the Free French, and experiences with German civilians. 83 pages. |

And, when I'd come she'd sit up, and they'd see she was pregnant and th guys would about fall over. PEG: No, we were in the Bay area, but I'd grown up in Salinas. LOW: And, then, my next call was at La Habre, California. We lived in an orange grove right about where Disneyland is now. PEG: Yes, that's where they built it. 1 LOW: And then, they sent me from there to the Richmond Refinery in Richmond, California, and then, back into San Francisco, and then a permanent assignment back into Richmond. And then, back over to San Francisco. And then, they moved the San Francisco offices over to Concord, California. They had built new office buildings over there. And at that time, we were living in the Bay area in a little town called El Cerrito, near Richmond and Berkeley. I'd noticed that my boss, who had lived up in that area, had moved over to the Walnut Creek area, and the company had paid for it. And, I said, "Well, will they pay for my move? And, he said, "Yes." And so, we moved there, and I didn't have to commute anymore. My wife had a little bit longer commute, but she wanted to keep me alive a little bit longer. So she said "I'll commute, and you can take it easy the last five years." 81 1 |
