Show LOW LL . L MM one end of this town. I can't remember where it was but it was in G rmany. I had a littl Italian sergeant that I put in charge of this group. And I put them in a hou e and he was to keep the guard duty watch on this warehouse. They'd been there about two days and here this guy showed up. He'd walked five miles back to where I was. He says, "I can't stay there any longer." I said, "Well, why not?" He said, "Well I just can't. It's just against my beliefs." And, I said, "Well, what is it?" And, he said, "Come on, I'll show you." So I put him in the jeep and we went back there. They had picked up two women, and they had billeted them upstairs, and they had made their own cathouse. And these guys were happy as clams, all of them, except this little Italian sergeant. And, he said, "I can't tolerate this." And, he said, "If I did anything, they'd kill me." And I knew they'd kill me too. So, I went in, and I said, "All right guys." I said, "You know the dangers of this sort of a situation?" They said, "Oh, yeah, we've taken care of that sergeant." I said, "What do you mean?" They took me up to the landing, and they'd made their own prophylactic station on the landing, and they had made sure they didn't get a venereal disease. I walked up the stairs and one of the girls was there. She was sick, she said. I went over and talked to her a minute. She was very attractive, about a thirty-eight year old woman. And the sad thing was, this was the only way that these two women could survive. Now, a little bit more about after the war. Because I didn't have enough points, I had heard about the American University at Biarritz. So I applied to go the American University at Biarritz. It only took about a week before I got a response, and it was just before the quarter was beginning. And, they said, "Sure, you can come." This was up on 64 1 2 1 |
