Show PAUL FRANKE OCTOBER 2, 2001 P AU: And so then we got the notice, the port of embarkation, for the invasion of Japan. And the day they dropped the bomb I was stamping my toolbox. I had made sergeant in the meantime because I was a machinist. But one day we had to tell, "Go into detail just what you did?" So I told them I worked in the roundhouse on locomotive engines and also worked in the powerhouse on generating equipment, so I became the electrician of the outfit. But it had a sergeant's rating so that's what I got. ' Course, I made more money then. BBL: Right. That was the benefit. PAU: I was getting nineteen dollars a month. And out of that I had to pay for laundry or do it myself at night in the latrine (laughs). BBL: PAU: HEL: dollars. PAU: So what did you do? Did you pay for laundry or- ? Oh, yes, I paid. He was sending me a few dollars now and then out of his nineteen It was only a couple dollars a month, but two or three dollars a month out of your nineteen dollars- BBL: Yeah, that's big. I wanted to ask you, you said that back in- oh, I forgot the name of the camp, where the 60,000 guys, when they told you, "Don't get on the train." PAU: BBL: PAU: BBL: Camp Claybourne. Yes. Did you ever get called up to go on the train? Oh, no. No. Oh, I was curious. 27 |
