Show PAUL FRANKE OCTOBER2, 2001 HEL: Hardy people. BBL: Yeah. I'll say. PAU: And then in 19 ... oh, when I was about nine-and-a-half years old- BEL: Well, they moved to Salt Lake, tell her, first, because your dad didn't want Helen to go to school out there at the salt works. It was a one-room school that they furnished for children out there. And he wanted her to have a better education. So that's when they moved in and quit. Didn't he quit then, his job? PAU: Yes. HEL: And went to work at the Garfield Smelter. And that's how they left the salt works, then. BBL: I see. Okay. PAU: And then, of course, my dad got my granddad a job as a painter there. And shortly after, in an industrial accident, he was killed. That was about 1924. And then he was taking care ofmy grandmother. And then in 1929, New Years Day, two fellows come running over to our house and say there's a dead man laying over in the surplus canal on the sand bar. HEL: BBL: PAU: You know where the surplus is at? Yeah. The bridge at that time was about two hundred feet north of where the present bridge is now. And the canal made a sharp turn which created a sand bar. And this sixteen-year-old girl-it turned out to be a girl- was laying there, frozen stiff. I remember that very well. My dad and I run over while these two fellows were phoning the police. 8 |
