| Abstract |
Edward Lueders (b. 1923) recalls his youth in Chicago. He was drafted in 1943, joined the Air Force, and spent several months in various stateside postings. He eventually ended up in India, attached to the Air Transport Command, where his assignment was to provide recreation and entertainment for the troops. He was discharged in March 1946. 72 pages. |

Show EDWARD G. LUEDERS February 1 2000 WIN: Couldn't see the Wasatch. I was just going to ask. EDW: I never got into the Wasatch. WIN: I was just going to ask whether you looked at the Wasatch, and whether it was just considerably different experience than growing up ... EDW: The Oquirrhs were the mountains in Keams. And particularly since they took us up there to do foolish things, like crawling on our bellies, and through grease wood. "Foolish" only in that there was still the case of, "What am I doing feeling miserable?" But it wouldn't have been foolish if we were in training of the sort that I'd had put to a purpose later, as I never have. WIN: Well, people complain about the smog in Salt Lake, the inversion at times. What they don't realize is that that period of time, up until the introduction of natural gas here, the coal tar haze was really miserable. EDW: And all winter long! It wasn't just the atmosphere, it was coal smoke with particulates that were so heavy. WIN: So you spent about two months at Keams doing a little bit of training, and not much of anything else. And waiting, probably, just for orders to come. EDW: I would come in, when I could, in the evening sometimes, and wander around Salt Lake City. Go to a movie, that was the big thing, down on 2nd South. WIN: There probably weren't any ... EDW: The Centre Theatre, as I recall, which was a great place. I went up to the campus.
