| Abstract |
Edward Lueders (b. 1923) recalls his youth in Chicago. He was drafted in 1943, joined the Air Force, and spent several months in various stateside postings. He eventually ended up in India, attached to the Air Transport Command, where his assignment was to provide recreation and entertainment for the troops. He was discharged in March 1946. 72 pages. |

Show EDWARD G. LUEDERS danger. February 1 2000 WIN: So you went down to Hanover College, and spent- what, three years there? EDW: I was in my- I was in my junior year, when I was drafted, as I recall. I didn't get very far in my junior year. WIN: So you ... Pearl Harbor happened at the end of- were you on quarter systems, or? EDW: I think they were semesters. WIN: Okay. In December. Do you remember that day? EDW: Oh, I do! I was playing table tennis in the basement of the women's dorm when the word came (I think I probably finished the game). But yes, I was very much out of it, at Hanover College, which is kind of a reclusive place by landscape setting - up over the Ohio River- very pleasant place to be schooled. And very quickly, we began to realize that war was hitting home, because the students were being drafted. At the time I was aware too. WIN: So you finished sophomore year, went through the summer, and started your junior year, that would have been in '42, end of '42. EDW: Yes. WIN: And you got drafted. ED W: I got drafted, as I recall, in March. '4 3. WIN: '43. So you're starting your second semester as a junior. EDW: Junior. WIN: Okay, you got drafted. Did you finally go to officer's candidate school? 18 |
