Show COL. WILLIAM F. ROOS November 11,2004 oh, a couple of months and never said a word to him. But he had heard me answer the questions as to the fact that I was from Utah. So he-when we were relaxing- he said, "Well, you're from Utah. What are you going to do about girls for Christmas?" And I said, "Well, gee, I don't know. I don't know any girls at all around here. I'm in real bad shape." And, so, he says, "I can fix you up." And, so, I said, "Well, you do that. I'm in favor of that." So the next day we were back to this old business again. And he slipped me a little note. And he said, "Here, you call this girl. She'll come." So when I got back to my room there was this little note on it that said Miriam Kelley, 127 Pelham Road, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. So I sat down and wrote her. Dear Miss Kelly: I told all about what we can expect at West Point at Christmas time, and all the activities we're going to have, and all this fun and everything. And, so, I'd like to invite you to come up there, too. And she was sort of expecting it, I guess, because she was a good friend of my pal's girlfriend. End of side 1 of tape 1 BILL: Okay. I think we can start now. Okay. So, in due time I got this letter back from her. Dear Mr. Roos: I'd be very happy to accept your kind invitation to come to West Point, and I expect to be up there on the day after Christmas. For the first dance I went down to Thayer Hotel where she was staying. I was standing in the lobby with three or four other cadets, and it so happened that they were all runts. I towered over them. As the elevator came down, the door opened, and she saw us all. She told me later that she said to herself: "I hope my date is the tall one." Her date was the tall one. And, so, she stayed until the big New Year's Ball on the 3 pt. And we just had a wonderful time. And it was love at first sight. 22 |
