Wayne Kimball (b. 1925) reminisces about growing up in Salt Lake City and working in the family laundry business until Pearl Harbor, when he enlisted in the Air Corps. He went to basic flight training in Bakersfield, California, and was assigned to air transport command, which was an aircraft delivery outfit. He later flew aircraft over "the Hump" from India. 39 pages. |

Show WAYNE KIMBALL MARCH 28,2001 airplane they flew, primarily C-47s at that time. It was a smaller airplane than the 46, and I was a prime candidate in the near future of getting into commercial fl ying. But I didn't. I wanted to come home. So I came home and struck up a new relationship with my wifeto- be and got married. BBL: WAY: BBL: So Barbara hadn't gotten married, then? No, she hadn't. So you came home and she was there. When, do you remember when you actually got home here in Salt Lake? WAY: BBL: WAY: BBL: WAY: February. Of '46? And I was married in April. Did you enjoy the flying? Yes, I did. But Beecher, Beecher Adams, when he came home he bought an airplane, a nice airplane. But he was making money with his business and he wanted me to buy in with him. I didn't have any money to do it, so I didn't do it. And I wasn't sure what I wanted to get into as far as school was concerned. My father came home one day with a brochure from the rotary club on optometry. So I looked into it, read up on it, and decided I'd go be an optometrist. So, that's what I did. BBL: WAY: BBL: WAY: BBL: Where did you go to school when you ... University of Utah and then Chicago. And was all that covered on the GI Bill? Yes. That's great. 31 |
