Show ,J L YTO ,J 12,2001 J Y: W 11, th int r sting thing was that I played f tb 11 thcr High and McKinley High chool from Honolulu, Hawaii, cain thi one year and we had arranged to go back-and this was th fall f 1 941-w had it arranged to go back in 1942 the fall of 1942 to play McKinley High chool. o I want d a free trip back to Hawaii and so I signed up for third year. I was g ing to graduat , then in 1942 but since this opportunity came up, I decided to go back for what they called th third year. So I signed up for it so I could go back and play football. Well, then Pearl Harbor was on December ih, 1941 and, of course, that changed everything and since I'd already signed up for third year I thought, well-cause I was only going to be sixteen when I graduated-and I thought, I think I'll just go back for third year. But when I went back for my third year, I only went to December and dropped out. And that's one of the reasons how I got into the navy. BBL: Oh, really? JAY: Yeah. So what happened at that time, I got interested in radio work and electrical work, electricity and so on there tny last year in high school. When I got out of high school-! graduated-! found out that the government had a trade tech school here in Salt Lake City and one of the courses they offered was radio, to be a radio technician-learn to be a radio technician. So I looked into that and that was kind of interesting. So I thought, well, instead of going into the university, maybe I'd go down there, because I knew I was probably going to be drafted, probably when I got eighteen or a little beyond that, and that was coming up. And so I thought, well, if I knew a little about radio, maybe that 'd help me out when I go into the armed services. So I looked into that and I also found out in looking into it, the Navy had a special program for radio 5 |
