BEC: Was your assignment that you were going to Tokyo? DAL: Heading to Tokyo. BEC: What were you going there for? DAL: Again, we were just transporting planes and pilots, as near as I can remember. That's all it was for. I don't know if I mentioned to you, in that picture I showed you of Tokyo right back of there, that building was MacArthur's headquarters. BEC: Just for the tape, in the picture you showed me, there were three of you in front, then, in the background, was the building you said was MacArthur's headquarters. DAL: In fact, Jack Richards, who lives just down here, used to work in that. He worked for MacArthur during the war. BEC: Do you remember how long you were in Tokyo? DAL: Oh, it wasn't very long, I don't think, three or four days. BEC: So the repairs weren't very extensive? DAL: No, it was just a matter of getting some welding done on some things. On the destroyer, the captain ran aground. He didn't know where some of those reefs were. The - original captain ran aground two or three times. That is, he hit the reefs. It bent the screws back and knocked the sound gear off of the thing, on the bottom there, that antenna there, and so forth. Out there, they'd have a floating dry dock. We'd have to go 31 |
