| Abstract |
West (b. 1918) recalls his childhood in Provo, Utah, and describes getting a degree in English from Brigham Young University. He taught school for several years and eventually received both a master's degree and doctorate in English. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations with the 7th Army Air Force. He describes intercepting and classifying enemy air-to-ground and point-to-point radio messages. He decoded and relayed information concerning weather conditions, enemy air action, and enemy administrative orders to locally-based air combat units. 28 pages. |

Show DALE H. WEST June 23, 2000 and that would get us in fast. I don't know if that's true,but that's what I heard. WIN: Well, there is that debate in the historical circles ·about that war, and how much he could have done, had they known, is also up to debate. Since most of the carriers were elsewhere, I suppose they could have, at least, got the ships out of the harbor where they were sitting ducks. DAL: I was teaching in Monroe when the bombing took place. WIN: So you remember that? DAL: I remember that. As a matter of fact, my radio had quit on me. I had married. WIN: You were married by December of 1941? DAL: I was married. We were going to get married when I graduated from college, but I couldn't get a job. I wouldn't marry unless I could support her, so it wasn't until I got a job in March of 1941 that we decided to get married in June. The school district down there said they wouldn't give me another contract because I wasn't married, so we moved it up to April and got married. I taught down there one more year, and then we moved up here. WIN: Was she a teacher, too? DAL: No. WIN: So they wouldn't give you a contract unless you were married? DAL: That's what they said. WIN: That policy went out long before, but I guess in some parts of the rural areas of Utah it persisted. So you were in Monroe teaching school, and I guess you were still working on your masters program at B YU, no? DAL: I was having to work in the summer at the Pleasant Grove Canning Company, so I wasn't 9 |
