Robert Allred (b. 1925) was with the 463rd Parachute Field Artillery and served in Italy, France, Belgium, and Germany. He recalls his childhood in rural Utah, and discusses his training prior to parachuting into France. He was in Bastogne when it was surrounded by the German army and describes his experience there. 89 pages. |

The war wa o r. h thi 1 u I Mormon, I guess, I belong to the Church of Jesus hri t. rk i in thr u h t world and it wouldn't have been without getting rid of the adv r ary. And it's too bad that too many good people on both sides- and th r m good people, there were actually some Mormons that were German that went down th tube too. But this had to happen that way, it had to happen. I guess it s the progress o human beings here on the earth. BEN: So how did it wrap up? Like you said, they signed the armistice, that's it. You're now officially assigned to occupation forces or are you going to be relieved? ROB: Yeah, we had a choice. They says: "We've got Berlin, a couple other stuff like that, and if you want to sign up as occupation forces you can do that and you'll probably be here until next- through the winter - the end of, maybe, the next spring." "Or you can take your chances and go back and if the war's not ended, you'll go to the Pacific." Well, I think our outfit went about fifty-fifty. [inaudible] I went to France [inaudible] played a little football. I did go to [inaudible] for a couple of months. [inaudible] It's a resort town. They play soccer and stuff there. But anyhow, we had to come out with this report of this guy that would shoot a sail about the same size as [inaudible]. Shoot if off your shoulder. And he had a few of 75 |
