Robert Allred (b. 1925) was with the 463rd Parachute Field Artillery and served in Italy, France, Belgium, and Germany. He recalls his childhood in rural Utah, and discusses his training prior to parachuting into France. He was in Bastogne when it was surrounded by the German army and describes his experience there. 89 pages. |

Show OBERT H. ALLRED about $6 000 a year. u u tb 2 BEN: Did -let's see- was Ephraim a, did you have a lot of transient p opl c m1ng through there at that time? ROB: Well, we knew everybody in Ephraim. That was it. But if somebody came in for the college or something like that, or the Forest Service, then there was a little change in the population. The headquarters for the Manti-Lasalle Forest was in Ephraim at one time. BEN: Okay, so there weren't many people asking for work, or going through that route? ROB: I can even remember when the Indians come around begging for stuff, almost. I was pretty young. My mother says they came begging for food, and stuff. BEN: So did you learn to ride a horse pretty early, then? ROB: Oh, yeah! BEN: So was that something you did quite frequently? ROB: Yeah. BEN: Okay. What year did you graduate? ROB: 1943. BEN: Okay, you graduated in '43. So that would be like May of '43 about then? ROB: Yeah, about May. BEN: So you were in high school then - well, I guess even before high school - when Hitler started making moves in Europe, that kind of thing. Were you aware of current affairs at all, or did you kind of do your own thing? 8 |
