Show SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA BRANCH In Santa Barbara, May 1890, at the time of the second annual meeting of its elder sister the Woman's Home Missionary Union, the Southern Branch of the W. B. M. P. was organized. During the thirty-three years of its existence the Branch has had but four presidents. The first was Mrs. J. H. Harwood, strong in spirit and earnest in service, who for two years gave of her unstinted labor and was then succeeded by Mrs. A. S. Averill, whose stirring address at the annual meeting in Pasadena, ''Women, the Master Calls." still rings in the heart like a clarion peal even after the lapse of thirty years. For two years Mrs. Averill acted as president and was followed by Mrs. J. IT. Williams, for twenty years the loved and honored leader. Upon her retirement in 1915 she was given the title of President Emeritus. Her successor is Mrs. J. H. Lash whose loyalty and devotion have been unfailing during the eight years she has carried the responsibility of the office. Many faithful, consecrated women have sustained these leaders. Among those who stand out conspicuously for length of service are Mrs. E. M. Pease in charge of the Cradle Roll; Mrs. Charles Hughes, treasurer for eighteen years, and Mrs. A. C.
