Show f won' have much time to miss her at this end of vacation. I do hope that she can have some classes at fechou for the women but their rooms are so small that they probably can not accomodate any but thatr own. Helen hardly ever writes so 1 was much interested to hear your news of her. in the same mail I heard from home that she had bobbed hair, bat A had read the news in youe letter first. I can imagine that she looks well that way but it is hard to realty see her with short hair.- V*re didn1 spend the summer with the bergaminis for ^adjei went to Korea with a crowd of hiking people, so I went to Pehtaibo as usual. I shall hope to get to the Bergaminis some days they have a new cottage at Chikungshan and everyone says it ss very nice. Myra •sawyer visited them in Uangchou and said the children were very dear and bright. ifm sorry you had all the work of getting up a Lintsing booklet, but i am sure it is a good one. I feel guilty that I didn' do anything about it when you sent out those other books, but it didn't ieem as if 1 could get the time. I am still housekeeper, but probably Alma or Maul will take it next year. We have had to dismiss Yft Shan for general laxiness and impudence and probabljs dishonesty} we tried hard all this time to believe that he was working and helping, and it seems that he was too blame for the other servants leaving and things going wrong. Our servants sail there wouldn'r be any more talk about their going if he wasn't here. We have Chia K*e as coolie and it is a reliefs he has had to be""so busy with the grate fires that he couldn* do much else, but he has kept those going as Yft Shan never would have. Our furnace is in now but not fixed up yet and it will be about a week, they say, before we can have anjt steam,-an I then we will be gone! tfe have been glad to have the five grate fires and the weather has been mild, fortunately,so we have gotten along very well but the halls are cold and we_can?^ work in our studies much. We have an enameled bath-tub also which is being connected with a drain, and we are all waiting anxiously for a bath in it I Chin Ts'ai Feng wanted to go to iechou this year and so tried it,but had trouble with her eyes and had glasses fitted, and then went to Tsinanfu and they found that she needed an apendicitus operation,an I she is about over that now. She didn' get much studying done and will not fio back there next semester, but we hope she will be lots better now. Liu Ch'un Hsiang and her mother are at Kuo-tzu-hsiang,and Ts'ai *'eng will probably have the yard day school for this semester. Ch*i Mei Chenlwho has had it,wants to go to Tun-changfu for more study but doss not knowvwhether she can make up the work of the first semester or nots if she can' they want her to go to Wang Ts'un. Thanks for your Christmas bookss we shall enjoy reading them. And the lovely nuts that the girls put into our Christmas bags were so_ very good and we do thank you for those good remembrances.-I haven* looked"""up the books you asked about but will try to before x go.I am ashamed not to*, rite more to you but there is so much to say I would never get thru anyway! i am trying hard to get all m/letters answered before i go but am afraid that I will not be able to manage it,-not to mention all the other things I ought to do! I do hope that Hester is feeling better about things and that you will not be having too hard a time. 1 certainly think your place is there as long as your father needs you and A know what a confort it is to you to think that you can be with him again after these years away. nith lots of love, |
