Show [51 She is only twenty one but has done very satisfactory work. Mrs. Wang who went to the station class at P'ang Chuang last fall took up the work for women, and, in spite of her diffidence, did nicely. Our plan is to fit the girls to enter the third class at P'ang Chuang. Since the teacher is from that school, and the most we knoAv about girls' schools was learned there, it is needless to say that it is our model. The girls Avho entered this spring had their classics and Bible work with Miss Tsu, though another yeai we hope to get a teacher for the classics. Something of arithmetic and a little of geography had been taught to some of them. The little girls have had physical exercises every day, given them by Dr.Tallmon, and in spite of the small court in which they lived only one child was ill, and she for only twj or three days. The women have studied their Bibles, the catechism on the life of Christ, and old Testament stories, the latter to prepare them for the catechism on the old Testament which they will take up when they return next fall. The Avork of the term has been good as far as their lessons Avere concerned, and, noAv that they are past history, the matters of discipline seem to have caused us more concern than they should, considering how small they look. We found them all so ignorant of the many things that strengthen us. It was very touching during Passion Week to watch their eager interest in the details of those days. Beyond the bare facts that Christ was crucified on the cross and that he rose again, they knew nothing. "Do you remember about the man who carried Jesus' cross for him?" "No, tell us about it," was the quick response. Their tears and confessions of sin led us to believe that they had been touched, and to offer up fervent prayers that their hearts indeed might be changed. One of the difficulties this year has been that the school was too croAvded. Next year Ave will have more room, and then the little girls will be by themselves and the women by themselves. We expect to add a few more girls and two or three more Avomen, inviting back most of those Avho have been in school this year. With the opening of the dispensary, the attendance of women on Sunday increased very much. They were very orderly and often stayed to both church and Sunday School. For lack of room, nothing could be done in a special way for the Avomen at Sunday School. The women and little girls of the school were taken back to the schoolroom, Avhich is perhaps a third of mile from the court where the chapel is, and were taught the Sunday School lesson by themselves, but the other Avomen simply listened |
