Show with their reading. They brought back a list of names of women and little girls; and after comparison Avith our list, and consultation with them, and consideration of the court we are to have for school purposes, Ave sent invitations to six Avomen and ten little girls to come to school. We thought that we had been busy before the New Year, but, to say the least, Ave were busier after that date. Each one of the three of us took up new duties, and, as Avas to be expected, with them came neAv troubles and new joys. As a prelude, a station class was held for the Lintsing Avomen for two Aveeks, just as last year, and a number of women showed that they had made advance under Mrs.Ting's care. One young woman who sews for us and has two children had read from Luke to Revelation. Dr.Tallmon's personal teacher married a heathen girl of fourteen a little oArer a year ago Avho has become very eager to read and learn. One little school girl had helped her grandmother through several chapters of the catechism. There A\ras also an interesting group of little boys that came each day, perhaps for the hot bread given each of the pupils at noon, but at any rate, they earned it. The girls' school and the station class for Avomen from the outstations opened on the twenty-fifth of February. The first week Avas confusion confounded. As you knoAv, we are neAv at this business of opening up boarding schools, and in spite of well meant efforts, and the intention to be forethoughted, there was much to be done that first week. The kitchen stove smoked. Lt was relaid and those who had come ate Avhen they could and Avhat they could Avhile it was being repaired. The "k'angs" would not draw. That had to be endured for every one says that Lintsing masons do not knoAv hoAv to build "k'angs." The carpenter did not haxe all the furniture ready. Some things could be bought to advantage at the third month fair, so Ave got along Avithout those articles until that time arrived, but out of it all Ave came SIOAVIV into something like a school. Then there were other troubles. The Women of the station class had not expected to help with the daily Avork and were rebellious about that. Then the matron and the head teacher had trouble. Miss Chang had not been satsfied in the work in Lintsing and had made herself disagreeable, so Avhen she demanded a cart to take her home, it Avas provided. Perhaps it would haAre been better if the matron had gone too, but she has many good qualities, and you can understand IIOAV hard it seemed to us to make two such radical changes. The younger of the two teachers was put in as head teacher and has carried herself with dignity and Avon the approval of all. |
