Show GOVERNMENT OF PUERTO RICO UNIVERSITY OF PUERTO RICO RIO PIEDRAS, PUERTO RICO SOCIAL SCIENCE RESEARCH CENTER April 2, 1952 Professor A. S. Atiya 13 Mariette Pasha Street Cairo, Efeypt Dear Professor Atiya: It has been a long time since I last heard from you and "lots of water has run over the dam." Last July, shortly after I was turned down on the Folbright, I received an invitation to cone to the University of Puerto Rico to leesbure for a year. At first I thought that it would be too much for me and so wrote refusing the offer. However, another letter from the UPR was so persuasive that I decided it would be a good thing for me to come here to enjoy myself and to recuperate. I really haven't accomplished very much in addition to my lectures, but I have becctae acquainted with a part of the United States of which I knew next to nothing before. This island reminds me in mai§r ways of the Hear East, the climate is warm and salubrious, and the people are friendly and interesting. There are always a ntmber of tfiaiting professors here, but they are mainly from our larger universities and most of them have not even heard of the College of Puget Sound. They find it difficult to understand why I persist in remaining in Tacoma, but I think that you can understand why it is fco attractive to me. Right now I'm looking forward to returning there in tine for the summer session. Puerto Rico has been a little too warm for me, and I haven't felt so well as I generally do in Tacoma. Meanwhile things have been happening in your part of the world. I do hope that the British wiU have sense enough to get out of the 6anal Zone for good, and I do hope that wiser heads will prevail in determining the future of troubled Near Eastern areas. Of course for an American to taILk about wiser heads might indicate that there was no need for wiser cnes in the United States, but I know that we are just as much in need of wise heads as are other nations. However, enotgh about politics. One of my dearest old friends is going to vtsit Cairo sometime in May I believe, and she asked me about you and I suggested that she call and say hell'o. I do not have her itinerary, but will write directly to her and ask her to get in touch with you folks when she arrives. She is a widow and well along in years, and she is now on a world cruise. I hope that you are able to get together for an evening and that flbrs. Atiya may have time to meet her even if you cannot spare an evening. Pleasee give my kindest regards to Mrs. Atiya, and best of good luck to you. I would appreciate hearing from you when you have the time and the inclination. Sincerely, _v A A O / |
