Dear Professor Atiya; Professor Calverley of the Hartford Seminary Foundation, has written me that you are expecting to visit the Pacific coast sometime in April and May, and I am very much interested in having you come to the College of Puget Sound for a lecture or a series of lectures. Fe happen to be one of the few small colleges, and for that matter one of the few institutions on the Pacific coast, offering work in Middle Eastern history. Our work is not very extensive at present, but we do have one six hour course surveying the field. This course is offered in the history department, but we would be interested in securing your services for both the departments of history and of religion. Perhaps you could use our college as a central point for-offering lectures in some of the other schools in our area. Would you be interested in visiting the College of Puget Sound, and how much would you charge for one lecture or a series of three or four lectures? I would try to arrange for talks at the University of Washington, and!at Washington State and perhaps whitman College as well, if you t.ink it might be possible for you remain in this area for a week or two. I have been for many jsears trying to stimulate interest in the field"of Near and Middle Eastern studies, and I have had very little success. I am sure that your visit to the Northwest would do a great deal to stimulate this interest, and I am hoping that your time on the Pacific coast will permit your coining up here. Yours very cordially, lyle S. 8he.saidine, Chairman, Dept. of history LSSjfc |
