Show GREETINGS FROM THE DIRECTOR Welcome to the fourth edition of the University of Utah's Undergraduate Research Abstracts Journal. I wish to congratulate the students whose abstracts appear in this Journal, a truly remarkable group of students who have conducted research and creative artistic work under faculty supervision in a wide range of disciplines. Many of these students are presenting their scholarly work at our Undergraduate Research Symposium on April 20, 2004 (visit the web site for next year's Symposium: www.ugs.utah.edu/urop/sympo-sium) This issue of the Abstracts includes the work of many students who received as-sistantships from the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP). UROP's primary purpose is to provide undergraduates with opportunities to collaborate directly with a faculty mentor in research or creative artistic activities. To find out how to become involved in UROP please visit our web site at: http://www. ugs.utah.edu/urop/index.htm I would also like to commend the Honors program students whose abstracts appear in this issue of the Journal. I am most grateful to the faculty who men-tored the students whose work is published in this journal. Thanks to Theresa Nydam, Bioscience Undergraduate Research Program Coordinator and Gretch-en Wilson, Administrative Program Coordinator, Honors Program, for recruiting student abstracts. We are pleased to publish twenty three abstracts representing student posters presented during January 2004 at the Utah State Capital Rotunda in conjunction with the "Posters on the Hill* event. We are indebted to Robert McDermott, Center for High Performance Computing, who was instrumental in producing these posters and in organizing the session at the Rotunda. Ronald Pugmire, Associate Vice President for Research and JoAnn Murray, his Administrative Assistant, ably assisted in recruiting and preparing students for Posters on the Hill, while coordination and publicity were provided by Kay Clark and Nancy Lyon from the Office of the Vice President for University Relations. I would also like to express my appreciation to David Pershing, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Ray Gesteland, Vice President for Research, for their financial support of the UROP Program. Their generous support has helped many students excel in research and creative artistic work. Finally, I am most grateful to Jill Boeder, UROP Administrative Program Coordinator, for her steadfast assistance in preparing this publication, and to John Francis, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, for his support and encouragement.
