Show Wiser Water Use in Salt Lake City Annual Water Conservation: 18 Acre- Feet £ The Wise Water Use Program is an education program developed by the Great Salt Lake Audubon Society and Utah State University Extension Services with the support of Salt Lake City Department of Public Utilities. Metropolitan Water District of Salt Lake City officially submitted the proposal. " The primary goal of this program is to educate the largest water users in Salt Lake City in wise outdoor water usage. The secondary goal is to educate home owners in wise water usage, both indoor and outdoor. The long- term goal is nothing less than a change in Utah's water usage habits to reflect a conservation ethic." » Part I of the program involved making contact with the top fifty water users in the public sector in Salt Lake City, including the University of Utah, parks, and golf courses. Free assessments were performed and a water-efficiency plan for each site was developed. The actual implementation was left up to the participating facility. Part II involved contacting residential home owners. Interested home owners were invited to participate in water- wise landscape workshops given by landscaping experts. The book Water- wise Landscaping by Terry Keane was used as a guideline. 10 |
