Show 117 1898 Valentine Hoy, a rancher in Brown's Park, is killed. Law officers from Utah, Wyoming and Colorado enter the Park making it less of a refuge for outlaws. 1899 Peoples' Canal Company formed to get water from Henry's Fork. The settlers involved organize town of Linwood. Town is inundated by Flaming Gorge about 1963. 1899 Secretary of Interior authorized to grant rights- of-way for dams, ditches and canals on or through the Uintah Indian Reservation. 1900- 1907 LDS Uintah Stake Tabernacle is built at Vernal. 1900 Brick school at Merrill ( Naples) is built. 1900 County courthouse is built at Vernal. 1900 Preston Nutter, a prominent cattle owner, moves his summer range from Strawberry Valley to Tavaputs Plateau. Establishes ranch in Nine Mile Canyon. 1901 Vernal LDS Ward chapel is built. 1902 Secretary of Interior is granted authority to allot reservation lands to Utes and open rest of land to entry. 1902 William H. Smart, then president of LDS Wasatch Stake, surveys Uintah Reservation for possible Mormon settlement sites. 1902 A post office is established at small community called Bridgeport, located at Jarvie Crossing. Town is abandoned in 1930s. 1903 Councils are held with Utes to secure their consent to the opening of their reservation. Consent is not given. 1903 Engineering parties are sent to examine hydrographic possibilities in Strawberry Valley. 1903 Post office is established at Myton. 1904 U. S. Canal built to area now called Tridell. 1904 Uintah Railway completes line from Mack, Colorado to Dragon. 1905 Presidential proclamation opens unreserved lands of Uintah Reservation to entry. Land rush is the result. |
