Show 113 1880 Uintah County is created and includes lands west from the Colorado border to 110th meridian, south to Green River and the south to Roan or Brown Cliffs. Ashley named county seat. 1880 White River and Uncompahgre Utes sign agreement to remove them from Colorado Reservation. White River Utes settle on Uintah Reservation. 1880 U. S. War Department establishes Fort Thornburgh at site of Ouray. Supplies are transported from Park City on road improved by the soldiers. 1880 Gold is found in Uinta Mountains, Carbonite Mining District is formed; mining camp is located at Bullionville. Miners find copper; Bullionville is headquarters of Dyer Mine ( 1887) then abandoned about 1900. Bullionville is location of C. C. C. camp in 1930s. 1881 Uncompahgre Utes are removed to Uncompahgre Reservation. 1881 Fort Thornburgh is moved to north of Ashley Canyon. A road and telegraph line are built over Uinta Mountains to Fort Bridger. This road follows the Lodgepole Trail. It is developed with the encouragement of William A. Carter and, therefore, becomes known as the Carter Road or the Government Trail. 1881 William G. Reynolds builds first flour mill in Ashley Valley. 1881 About this time, Lars Larsen builds the " Mau- be" Ferry near Jensen. Jensen puts in other ferries in later years. 1881 Uintah Boarding School for Utes is opened. It limps along for several years. 1881 A. J. Johnson illegally builds sawmill on reservation near present Tridell. 1882 Uncompahgre Reservation is established by Executive Order. 1883 Mormon missionairies assist Indians to make irrigation canal about 15 miles below Fort Duchesne. An Indian settlement becomes established there. 1884 Glines Ward ( LDS) is organized. Chapel is built ca. 1892 and used until ca. 1950. 1885 Ouray Boarding School for Ute children is opened, but |
