Show 110 1854 Green River County extended south, incorporating entire Uinta Basin. 1857 Colonel Albert Johnston and federal troops sent to " chasten" the Mormons winter in Bridger Basin. A relief expedition is sent to Fort Massachusetts in New Mexico. It travels through Brown's Hole. 1860s William A. Carter, Philip Mass and Ike Burton, after mustering out of " Johnston's Army," settle in Bridger Basin, Brown's Hole and Ashley Valley respectively. All become influential cattle ranchers of the area. 1860s Following the lead of W. H. Synder, cattle in increasing numbers are driven north over old Cherokee Trail to transcontinental railroad line. Brown's Hole is favorite wintering spot and becomes noted as refuge for cattle rustlers. 1860s John Honslinger or Honselena, a horse trader, establishes his camp in Brown's Hole. The town of Dutch John is later named after him. 1861 Brigham Young sends exploring party to Uinta Basin. The group reports unfavorably on area's potential for further Mormon expansion; therefore, Young supports recommendation to reserve area for Indians. 1861 President Abraham Lincoln establishes by Executive Order the Uintah Valley Reservation for the Indians of Utah. Congress confirms the order in May 1864. 1861 E. L. Berthoud and Jim Bridger lead expedition to establish route for Central Overland Mail Company. The route is west from Denver along the sources of the Blue and Yampah Rivers through the Uintah Basin. 1862 Wasatch County is created with a north boundary along summit of Uinta Mountains and south to present north boundary of Carbon County. 1865 Utah Indian superintendent Oliver Irish negotiates at Spanish Fork a treaty with Utes to encourage them to move to Uintah Reservation. Utes sign treaty, but Congress does not ratify. 1865 Irish supervises the establishment under the direction of Agent L. B. Kinney of an agency and farm for the Indians near head of Daniel's Canyon. 1865 Third California Veteran Infantry led by Patrick Connor march through Uinta Basin on way east from Ft. Douglas, S. L. C. to Denver using the Berthoud road. |
