Show 108 CULTURAL CHRONOLOGY SUMMARY History 1776 The Dominquez- Escalante expedition enters the present state of Utah at a point east of Snake John Reef, crosses the Green River and travels through the Uinta Basin along the Old Ute Trail. The expedition has been guided since August 31 by a Tumpanowach Ute called Silvestre. 1780s- 1840s Uinta- ats Utes continue to use the Uinta Basin for camps and for buffalo hunts. Ute people probably travel out of the Basin to trade with non- Utes at Utah Lake and along the Old Spanish Trail. 1812 American fur trappers Andrew Henry, Edward Robinson, Jacob Reznor and Martin Cass may have traveled through present Daggett County while trapping headwaters of Bear River and rivers east. 1824 French- American fur trapper Etienne Provost, based in Taos, New Mexico, explores the area along the Green River, south of the Uinta Mountains. 1825 American fur trapper and trader William H. Ashley, based • in St. Louis, Missouri, boats down the Uinta Basin section of the Green River. • « , 1827 French- Canadian trapper Baptiste Brown may have settled in Brown's Hole, which may have then been named after him. 1829 Fur trappers Christopher " Kit" Carson and John Robertson or " Jack Robinson" trap along the Green River. Robinson later establishes in Brown's Hole a trading business which continues until 1843. 1830s Buffalo become extinct in Uinta Basin. Uinta- ats Utes must travel to Bridger Basin and into Colorado to continue hunting them. 1831 French- Canadian Dennis Julien traps the Uinta River. Leaves inscription on boulder at Whiterocks. 1833 Christopher " Kit" Carson establishes small trading post at confluence of Green and White Rivers. 1834- 1835 Winter rendezvous held in Brown's Hole by American fur trappers. 1837 Fur trapper Antoine Robidoux, based in Taos, New Mexico, establishes trading post on west fork of Uinta River.
