Show _ . ' • n -ii-r. pcn, I would respectfully suggest that U. S. troops be employed to ring the children of the obstinate Indians into the schools, but in my i present opinion it will be productive of equally good results onh perpetuate better feeling among all of the utes to folic?; up the moral jsuasion policy, which my visit and friendly councils would seem to Ifncourage, instead of the more 'drastic measures which would naturally be • sliMmt,Hating to both parents' & pupils. In conclusion I respectfully recommend that a reasonable time be ifglven the utes to make good their recent promises to me regarding their I -Schools and that agent Myton be not required, for the present at least, •to press the attendance more rapidly than he can induce the Indians by moral suasion, and that if upon the opening of schools next September they still persist in withholding their children, that U. 9. troops be if employed for the purpose of bringing them into the schools, which,. however, from the present feeling among the Indians, if properly fostered, I hardly thank will be necessary. Indian office enclosures of the 7th ult. which were furnished me .for my information are returned herewith.
