Show Myton evidently misunderstood what he meant; that he (Charley) simply .|said;:'to the Captain of police that indians sometimes burned a building in which any person had died, and a girl having died in the sohool that morning some Indian might att-empt to bum the building that night; that the Captain then reported this aunaise to Agent Myton and Agent Myton sent tor him "Charley "and questioned him regarding same, and, as ' above stated, either misunderstood the fall import of his statement or i it was incorrectly interpreted to the agent, who, for safety's sake, took the precaution to call for troops to protect the building and iAVes of the employees which he thought might be in danger. Agent Myton, however, states most positively that policeman Charley informed him that a threat to btirn the building had bean made by indians. The Indians now realize the mistake they made in taking their children from the school upon that occasion and feel very sorry over the affair- none of them regret it more than Black Hawk, who was primarily ed and chiefly responsible for the excitement occasion, and stanpede of the school children which followed. I am confident that my explanation of the enormity of Black Hawk's offense and the duties of Indian police in general, was clearly & fully understood by the indians assembled and appeared to meat with their approval, and that it will d€>ter them from attempting anything of the like in future. I told them that the unpleasant occurrence of their taking their children forcibly from the school, together with the soldiers having been brought to protect the Government property, which, from their attitude at the time, was deemed necessary, had passed and that it should be placed behind us and not looked back to nor referred to in future,but that they should go forward from now on in a straight-forward course and co-operate with the Depart- |
