Show Marriott Fund Report Page 5 III. OTHER PURCHASES In addition, the Marriott Committee agreed to transfer $10, 000 of Marriott money to the book fund of the Law Library for the purchase of basic materials which would benefit all students at the University. Appendix II gives a summary of purchases made so far of materials for the Law Library. The Committee also authorized the Acquisitions Librarian of the Marriott Library to make purchases of basic material with a total cost of $1,000 or less at his discretion without bringing such minor items before the Committee. A number of such purchases were made normally of basic reference and research material. Among the items purchased under this authorization were a $900 collection of French political pamphlets, a $600 collection of critical works on the American Revolution, a $32 0 reprint of the Mennonite Quarterly and a $1,100 microprint edition of a collection of Russian historical . documents. Also a ten volume reprint of the journals of Napoleon Bonapart in Egypt for $500, a reprint of the entire backrun of the William and Mary Quarterly for $475, a 9 volume Catalog of the. Blakerwood Library of Zoology and Ornothology at McGill University , for $605, and a $925 reprint of the entire backrun of the Virginia , Magazine of History and Biography. During its first year, the Marriott Committee authorized the allocation of $2 00, 000 to be divided among the six subject area librarians for the purpose of purchasing individual, low-priced monographs to fill in our holdings of "undergraduate" material. This allocation was to be divided in three annual allotments, only two of which were actually appropriated. Recognizing the fast approaching end of Marriott funds, the Committee cancelled the third year's allocation last January. Early in its proceedings, the Committee authorized setting aside between $2, 000 and $5, 000 of interest earned on the Marriott money for the purpose of eventually publishing a list of the materials purchased. In order to accomplish this task, the Library has maintained a separate file of duplicate slips en all Marriott purchases. This file now contains approximately 11,600 slips representing an estimated 5 0,000 to 75,000 titles (remembering that many collections, including micro collections, are represented by only a single slip). This staggering quantity of material representing perhaps as much as a 15 percent increase in the monographic and serial holdings of the Marriott Library has had and will have a significant impact on the quality of our collection. |
