Show Marriott Fund Report Page 8 build this to the major collection which it should be would probably be far wrong, but it is safe to say that $ 1, 000, 000 worth of Audio Visual material could be purchased and" still leave us unable to fill all the demands which will be placed upon the Library within the next decade. Another major area of need is support for the developing and ongoing programs which we have never been able to fund adequately and which we have no prospect of providing real support for in the near future. I'm thinking particularly of our Middle East collection, the recently established masters program in Slavic languages, the Speech Pathology and Hearing Department and Clinic, the developing graduate programs in Architecture, and the apparent Increased emphasis being placed on Latin American studies. (Within the past two years, three different teaching departments have hired five new faculty members with Latin American interests and training.) All of these, and several others with perhaps less importance from the Library point of view, require special standing order programs, special buying procedures, special handling because of language difficulties, and funding at a higher per-student level because they are essentially graduate programs. There is simply no way to estimate the dollar need associated with support in these areas. Depending upon the level at which support is desired, any dollar figure from zero up to a million dollars could be absorbed into any one of these categories, in some cases without making any serious in roads into the amount of material available. Finally, we are going to come under increasing pressure to do something about a minorities library. Considering the vast amount of material we know to be already available, the small amount of purchasing of such material done by the University of Utah Libraries in the past, and the plethora of material currently being issued, this area is almost a bottomless pit. W e could pour tens of thousands of dollars down it every year and probably not see the development of a major collection for at least a decade. VI. ADDENDUM Having had the experience of the million dollar Marriott gift with only soft money provided for processing (and not enough of that) it is worth noting in this report that future sizeable gifts to the Library should come accompanied with some provision for processing. This very likely means more soft money, but people hired in this fashion should be hired on a year to year basis with a clear understanding that when the gift itself disappears, so does their job. |
