"Your money's good," says Sergeant Armstrong without looking up from his cards. Next to Armstrong is a black sergeant from 3 company who has a combat infantryman's badge on his fatigues and next to him a big blond Pfc that John Henry doesn't know. The fourth man is Tucson John Sutter. After e.n hour, John Henry is breaking about even. They stick to seven-card stud most of the time, a.nd the winning hands stay low. Two pairs is usually good enough, once in a while someone gets three of a kind or a small straight. "Let's try a little five-card," says Armstrong when it's his turn to deal. "That's a nan's game." "You gonna deal them cards or just talk about it all night?" says the Pfc. "The winners laugh and shout, and the losers say 'deal the cards,'" says Jackson with a happy smile. He's had some good hands and there's a pile of bills in front of him. "Bet the ace," says Armstrong. "Two dollars without looking," says Jackson, who hasn't looked at his hole card yet.
