Later, he wakes up lying on the back seat staring up at the sunshine and the tops of trees, bouncing gently back to the United States along Mexican dirt roads. Thompson is driving, O'Connell and Arkwright squeezed in beside him; John Henry has the back seat all to himself. The radio's on and O'Connell and Arkwright are harmonizing with it The stars at night They shine so bright Deep in the heart of Te-exas John Henry hums along with them and tries not to think about the six-hour ride back to Fort Hood in the heat of late summer with the hangover he is just beginning to feel. The car stops at the border. A head peers in the window. "Where were you born?" it says. "Catskill, New York," says John Henry when his turn comes, and lays his head back down on the already hot seatcover, The border patrol looks at him with deep suspicion and they motion for everybody to get out of the car. Hands around the ankles, hands under the armpits, they lift John Henry out and prop him up against the nearest wall. Three of them begin to dismantle the car. One peers under the fenders, another takes out the back seat, the third is taking the spare tire out of the trunk and shaking it. |
