Show 13 5. Stonecrusher ( Figure 11) High intermittent hazard. Stonecrusher is a concave gully located just south of Lone Pine. The upper reaches of this gully are prone to depth hoar formation. A close watch should be kept on this area following the first snowfall; and if depth hoar is observed to be forming, it is wise to attempt to arrest the formation by boot- packing. Stonecrusher and Lone Pine have at times slid together. Of particular importance is the fact that Stonecrusher and Lone Pine, when they slide very large, may hit the lower terminal of the Collins Lift. Normal control of Stonecrusher is carried out by artillery fire either from the gun at the guard station or from Peruvian Ridge. 6. Jitterbug ( Figure 11) High intermittent hazard. Access to the top of this slope i s from the High Traverse, but a traverse out from'Racecourse Saddle will take a person into the middle of the slope. Control is normally by the Peruvian Ridge gun. At times, i t is acceptable to blind- fire at West Rustler, Jitterbug, and Stonecrusher and then open Racecourse Saddle to skiers. The High Traverse should not be opened on the basis of blind-firing results only, however. The south side of the upper Jitterbug gully is a very active area for slab formation. Artillery fire should be aimed at the south side of the gully. There have been several near- accidents due to skier- released slides on Jitterbug. It is a tricky slope. |
