Show Alta is one of the oldest ski resort areas in the West and its history of avalanches dates back to the days of mining and early development of the Salt Lake Valley. The resort is located near the head of Little Cottonwood Canyon, one of the major culinary water sources for the residents of Salt Lake County, Utah. Because of its close proximity to a major population center and because of the long snow season, Alta is a popular, heavily used winter sports area. In the interest of efficient and effective handling of avalanche problems which could affect public safety, the United States Forest Service has developed this Avalanche Control and Safety Plan. Not the final answer for any given set of conditions, it should, however, give solid guidance to the people entrusted with the important job of avalanche control in this resort area. |
