Show 2. Emma Slide Paths ( Figure 5) The Emma slide paths are a series of gullies lying east of Flagstaff Mountain. These gullies may run independently, which is the normal situation, or they may release sympathetically or as one. The Emma paths run much less frequently than the slide paths above the road down the canyon, but during severe storms a hazard can develop here. Judgment must be used in shooting the Emma and Flagstaff paths, since an artificial slide released by artillery fire might fill in the gullies, causing the slides to follow a different course in running later on in the year. Facilities are located in the Alta area in such a manner as to lie between the gullies, and hence not normally in a direct line of the slides, except Snowpine Lodge which is in line with one of the gullies. The decision of whether to shoot or to let the slope stabilize itself lies with the snow ranger and this decision is often a difficult one to make. If the snow ranger feels that a definite hazard to life and property exists from these paths and that the hazard is not likely to stabilize itself quickly, then he has no choice but to shoot. In addition, the easternmost slide on Emma Hill damages the Culp cabin when conditions are right. |
