Show 54 NORTH CHINA MISSION possible. We have here a church of 45 members, a boys' school enrolling 72 pupils this year, a branch dispensary and a little school for girls. This place is second in importance only to the central station, yet we are trying to carry on the work there with not a brick of permanent plant!" (TAIKUHSIEN) "There are now four Missions in the Union. If each would give fifteen thousand dollars, the sixty thousand dollars thus provided would furnish a new plant for the North China Union Woman's College, which would accomodate about a hundred students. If this sum were assured, we could plan about ten years into the future. To make this one Christian college for women in the northern half of this country of four hundred millions what it ought to be in the more distant future, we should reckon in millions instead of tens of thousands. But the practical matter for us now is to plan to meet the needs right at our door." And these are simply illustrations, large or small as to the amount of money required, of what the Mission is facing every day. We hardly expect our children to clothe themselves while they are still in public school, yet that is what we are too often trying to make the Chinese church do. But aside from these spectres that disturb the sleep, there are the other calls which, if anwered, would mean so much for the good of the work. Possibly the work we have may limp along without these, but it would run with them. "The school buildings are a problem in themselves. They are]all far too small, crowded, with few windows or other means of good ventilation, while the indispensable chairs (or rather benches), and tables are neither uniform, beautiful or hygienic."
