Show 28 NORTH CHINA MISSION TAIKUHSIEN, in a similar way. a teacher loaned to the government girls' school has counted steadily for the best things. And through the day-school children, many homes are reached, while in many of the fields, the children of the schools furnish a large proportion of the accessions every year. Of course, such influence depends directly on the character of the teachers, and it is an increasing joy to see the graduates of some of the newer schools back at work as teachers after further study. In SHANSI where the educational work is so new, such alumni are just beginning to count, but they hold wonderful promise for ihe future. Iu the older districts, they have been becoming the leaders of the church. Most of the stations report efforts to increase the efficiency of the schools. A Union Teachers' Institute was held in Tientsin last summer, and local normal schools were held EFFICIENC\? '" F E N C H 0 W a n d TAIKUHSIEN. In Fen-chow, every teacher was required to attend and. only those who passed the examination at the end were re-employed. Here the county magistrate himself enthusiastically gave two hours daily to the school, teaching courses in methods and in school management. In Taikuhsien. a normal course has been given in connection with the Oberiin-Shansi Memorial Academy for the second lime this year. A school board has been elected for each of the primary schools,, who control the finances,, subject to the educational committee of the station. Examiners have been sent out at the end of each term here, as well as in TUNGCHOW, and have helped to tone up the school system. Taikuhsien and: Fenchovv both have school inspectors, wiio supplement the work of these committees. The problem of the curriculum has also taken a good deal of attention, as there is a desire to conform as closely as possible to government schedules, and these have been more or less constantly varying. In the Oberiin-Shansi Memorial Academy at TAIKUHSIEN, tuition above board has been charged! for the first time this year, and a variety of administrative Educational Committee starting to inspect schools Tungchow |
