To some it has meant warmer clothing and more nourishing food; to others, it has meant tuition money and so a chance to get an education. Some of them are learning to read also, under the instruction of the evangelists. TAIKUHSIEN, FENCHOW and LINTS1NG have all undertaken similar work for the women, and in Lintsing among the tatters is a blacksmith! As a result, the missionaries in Lintsing enter into the problems of their daily lives, aud have many opportunities to prove themselves frieudly. It was decided this year that none of the industrial workers should be considered eligible when it came to distributing charity funds, but if money could not be given, it could be loaned, when it seemed wise, and milk and free hospital tickets could be furnished for sick babies. Soap aud ointment for chapped hands have been for sale at a reduced price. One person in the family doing tatting seems to change the attitude of the whole family to the church, and all the little brothers and sisters of the girls who tat run out smilingly when the missionary goes past and say: "I am a Christian too. Doesn't my sister t a t ?" In the FENCHOW field, night schools are being introduced wherever there are teachers able to carry on such work. They _ T „ „ _ , c r r i r tm o u s e a series of books limited in their vocabulary to six hundred words, those most frequently used in printed Chinese, starting in with a primer which teaches the characters, and following with three readers dealing with such subjects as Sanitation, Ethics, Patriotism, Letter-writing, etc. A monthly also limited to these characters is published by the originator of the system, and a certificate is given for the completion of the whole course.
