Show moonlight, and then lost it, but instead of abandoning the search they camped where they lost the trail, and in the early morning succeeded in finding It again and soon came upon the robbers, arrested tbnn, and bronght them back to the ameocy. The criminsls were turned over to the United States marshel annd are now i l jail in Salt Lake City awaiting the action of the grand jury in September. I give the details of this capture to show haw persintent the police are in performing their duty. In thim connection I may say that this is the only orime known to have been committed on this rrservstion during the past year. Whisky baa been brought in several different times by Indians and on one or two oocnsions brought to them camps by white men. The introduction of whisky ie a matter of seriooa anm, ganoe to the agent,. I t is mnch easier fur Indians to obtain vhisky now than It we8 before the countrp around the borders of the resarvat, ion had been settled. I do not think whisky is sold to the Indians openly. One Indian who had been fined by the chiefs for selling whiaky to other Indians, a i d that s. white man, whom he did not know, sold it lo him in the dark. Nearly all the Indians love whisky, and it would be a hard matter to make them turn intbrmera. The sauitsry eondxt, ion of these Indisns is very good. Nearly all of them come to the agency phgsioisn when they are aerioosly niok. The inflnenae of the medicine men i. gradually giving way to the services of n skillful physician. Referring to their morsl condirioo, they love gambling and horse racing, but they are honeat aud virtuous. Nearly half uf them belong to the Mormon church; not from any special piety of the Indians, but the Mormons have always endeavored to onrry favor with them. In conoluaion, I thiuk the prospects for steady advancement are brighter than they ever were before. The Indiaus must for severai year8 to come depend largely-upon the Department for their sup ort, but they are gradually learning the art of self de-pendence. Colorow and his Rttle band of followers who would not come to this re-serve to live have expremed ta ma their intention of permanently settiin here with-out comnnlsion. The anent and the Indians are one in nuroose. and 8 e em-olov.4 force is as good w I conrd wish. Respectfully submitted. - . . ELISRA W. DAVIS. 7Jftited state8 Indian Agent.
