Show REPORTS OF AGENTS IN UTAH. trial-achool, hut hsve 8lways been met by the same reasons for not sending them, riz: L'Wh.i s it that Washineton doe8 not bnild a, school-ho~~hser s., as he acread to when ~~~ - ~ ~~a.- .-~ we sold him our l a d s iii Colorado 7 If we wnd our childran away to school aquaa heap cry all the tirue. Ute squaw heap like her papoose. Ute bag no uodervtaud white man house, mebbe so die." But their main argument is that Washington has &Iwaya promised the Utes 8 school-honae and never built one, butwhen he does, they will send their children to school. The dwellings am nothing hut log huts, not fit for a white elan to live in; they .re full of vermin, and it is impoaeible to get rid of them, ar the houses are built of cotton-wood logs, with the bark left on. Just imagine the agent's house with .'/-foot ceiling and no ventilation, sitting on anemiuenoe that iis as destitute of vegetation srr the Dry Tortugas, with the sun ponriog down upou it for fifteen l~ourps er day and the t h e r mometer nt 105 in the shade, and then going in there to sieop; and my house is the best on the reservation. My an~ploy6s nnd myself have beeu sick a great deal t,his summer, caused principally from having to sleep in these sweat-box-, and the pray it is proposed to fix lip aid Fort Thornburgh for the new agenoy is not ping to help matters muoh. IMPROVEMENTS. There have no improvements of a permanent kind been made nt the sgeney during the year, notwitbatanding there has been a veq lmge ntetount of money espauded for that purpose which was woirte than thrown awily. As far as the agent is con-cerned at this agency in the matter he is utt*rly powerless to do anything, as the agency for the last year hm been conlinnaliy ifflicted either h~ oon~naissioners or special agents who have spent a large au~aunotf ruuney and aacoruplished absolutely nothing. I do not know whether other agents are afflicted in this way or not, but any that are have my sympathv. AGENCY BARM. My employBs fenced, plowed, and planted in wheat, oats, potatoes, &c., 40 mres of land which was vi r t l l s l l~la bor thrown away, na t,he 620,000 irrigsting ditch that was recommended and coostrt~ctedu nder the parsoual mlpervisioi) of the Ute commis-sioners is an abbolute failure, and a.s I expected to get my supply of water from it of course the farm is a failurn also. INDIAN FARMS. There are ten of my Indians who made a start at farming this spring and have raised small patches of wheat, oats, potatoes, ooru, &c. There were st least thirty mare who had their looatitions selected sud ware ready to go to work, bnt them was no water forthcoming, and they did not put in s crop. I do not think they will aver farm vary extensively, but most of them, iu time, w111 oultivatte small farms. CRIME. There has been no orime committed hy thesa Indians or against their persons dur-ing the year on the reservstion whatever. There was one of their number killed on Miguel Mountains, in Colorado, last Ootober. Ic was impassible for me to get any definite information in regard to it, only that he was killed. The Isdians themaelves think he was as likely to hsve been killed by Colorado Utea as by white men, and I am inclined to the asme opinion. On the 7t.h of Angust, I&?, there was a white man by the name of Willism Radruan, of Middle Park, Colorndo, committed suicide by shooting himself throunh the head. He ww fionnd by Harry Gobieo, of Snake River, and Aodrsw Strong, a? Blne Mouutaiu. A thoroogh inveatigation of t,he facts by myself and other white men found this to be the oiluse of his denth. There are two Mormons who claim ranohes on this reservation: A. C. Hatch aud P. Dodds. These renohes are the hendunnrters for all the cow-l~ovs who want to hold rvrrlu on rhr resrrvnri8,n. 1 u!odordiautl ilarel, is luovlng n larfe I v , ! ~ 01. horse8 an.! r a l r l e r o l i ~ria~n ch; alao, rbat he i, g ~ , l l l ~ t ~ 1~,so). u01t1 illnutlt t\vu i~8dnodr8.d: ie>t.d o f Indian I:rnd this rulolmvr. 011 Uoue~rti,rr'?;l.I re!.
