Show 5 of our coming. He proved to be a gracious Indian gentleman, much intercsre(l in the welfare of the handmade paper industry of his division. Wit r. Saini as our guide, we drove in a fanga to an outlying suburb,or district cf Salliotycalled Nekapuraya locality whese paper has been fabricated fo hundredsof years. This suburb is also known as Mahala and is on the smal river Aik, which is, T believe, sometimes given on maps as the Ek River. Ou first visit was to the paper mill of Mr. Mamudeen Khagjce, photograph 33, a Mohammedan, whose name was ongmd"y derived from th Hindustani word Kaghazi,-Papermaker. This craftsman was a man of fai intelligence, certainly possessing more worldly knowlul(,u than the lowly xs we had just left in Kashmir. His buildings were two in numbe -the actual mill, where the pulp was beaten and the paper formed, an the family living quarters, which included a small, cellar-like room wher thesizing and polishing of the paper was done. The plaster walls of these tw bmldinge, as well as neighbouring walls, were used for the drying of paper ugh, here, as in other papermakin centres of India, the walls of the house \«ccmu\htoorough for this purpose. Photographs 34-35. The courtyar was occupied by a series of ropes, laced back and forth, about three fect fro the ground. These ropes were used for drying the paper afterit had been size with wheat flour paste and before it was polished.
