Show of paper could be produced. T am of the opinion that number would b flppm, mauly correct, although the vatman assured me that he could mak vo hundred and fifty sheets in that time. After about fifty sheets had bee [urmcd and couched, another gun top plank applied. No press was uwd, but during the night the heap o newly-formed paper was subjected to the weight of several heavy stones th pressure of which eliminated some water and left the sheets more or les easy to remove. A day or two after the pressing of the paper, each sheet wa stripped separately from the pile and applied to either an inner or an oute wall to dry. The removal of the single sheets of paper from the pile required deal of skill, and even the trained worker ruined many sheets in the process The trouble came through the lack of proper pressing, as the sheets wer ‘much too wet, making the stripping tedious and difficult. The mois shee ‘were "pasted" to the walls by means of an extremely crude brush fashione from the beard of a goat. Sometimes several sheets were brushed against th wall, one on top of the other; the dry plaster wall absorbed the moisture an the sheets were then easily removed or fell to the ground from their ow weight. The length of time required for drying was influenced by the con dition of the walls and the atmosphere In days past, when the papermalers were more particular than at pres ent, the dry sheets were subjected to a slight rubbing with a sort of stone, which eliminated, to some extent, the rough foreign par an knots of fibre that found their way into the pulp. At present .m we(k is dispensed with, and the sheets are given their final burnishing, or finish, without this extra precaution After the sheets were dried, they were trimme with a sword-like knife, this process being shown in one of the photograph taken in another part of India. The trimmed sheets wer next placed upon a board where their surfaces wer covered with rice starc te by means of a woolen glove, photograph 25, the numbe of applications depending upon the grade of the paper.
