Show empty room into a study room. Here it was that, day after day, we hoped the women and girls would zealously apply themselves to the study of the New Testament or simpler books. It was a treat they had not had for four years and we saw they intended to make the most of it. As we sang the songs and read and talked that first morning, my mind was very busy studying each face before me, my heart full of the hopes for the results of the class, especially in the matter of unbinding the feet. Old women hobbling along to the fair, younger women at home trying to do the work with crippled feet, little girls from six to eight just in the first agonies of pain when the little toes are being bound under and the bandages are drawn tighter and tighter to make a beautifully arched instep and short foot, these are daily sights and a daily inspiration to do something to alleviate such suffering. |
